Research for Banksy

Title: Research for Banksy

Date: 20-11-2017

Edward.JIA  (JIA16500432)

Banksy is an anonymous England-based graffiti artist, political activist and film director of unverified identity.

Their satirical art of street and subversive locution combine dark humour with ornament executed in a distinctive stencilling technique. Banksy’s works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.

One of my favourite pieces of art is called “There Is Always Hope It was done by a very well-known street graffiti artist Banksy. “There Is Always Hope” is one of his most iconic pieces. The words are written just behind a young girl, who can be seen reaching for a balloon in the shape of a heart. Much of what Banksy paints has an on the surface meaning.

It is this obvious and straightforward message that possibly attracts the majority of his admirers. But it is the deeper meanings behind his art that causes us to look at his work with something akin to awe. So regardless of how the viewer interprets the image itself, Banksy gives us all hope with four simple words: There is always hope. Although simple, it is an image that seems to draw the viewer in again and again.

Section 1: Research Methods

As time goes on, I have finished my own project. In this project, I have acquired a great number of knowledge and methods, which encouraged me to convey my own ideas through the materials, online, museums, galleries, books, landscapes, daily life, advance from tutor and even studio crits. As matter of fact, when I took bus from Chelsea to the London Bridge, I saw outside through the windows on bus which inspired me to found this idea. Sometimes, I fall in love with the museums and galleries especially Tate and Imperial War Museum which gave me a great place to helped me build research in this project. I made some research for Richard Whiteread, Dali, and David Hockney which imaged me to developed my own works and help me to developed my project. Not only made some research for artists and their works but also, I made some research for subject chosen, colour composition.

Section 2: Ideas and concepts

My idea was from spy when I saw landscape in the central London on the bus through the window. Many people believe that people can remember the things they like better, yet the truth is, the power of negative things always get the better of us. In my point of view, I think people are working for secret war who are poor men and even to be a hero from background. Every time, when I hear about the story about spy that always give me a kind of sad motion. I wanted to used my style to create works and inspired other people to understand the unsung heroes who belongs to their own country, so it was the reason why I created this work.

I would like use different, unrelated things together and rebuild lines by my own logical. In this project, when I saw the landscape on the bus, I found some things that I thought it could be communicated, such as plants, CCTV camera, traffic lights, and shapes of streets. I used them to rebuild an environment to stand for the emotion by spy’s emotion. To be honest, spies are human too, same to us, because of those element of work, so they cannot have their own emotion, they maybe want to have a quiet life, sweet family, even living in safe, such as those plant in most of people’s home. However, they cannot, as we know they just have a single ticket, sometimes, they need to keep watch on somebody, but they maybe have already scouted by others, like CCTV, traffic lights in our city. Section 3: Project of Materials, methods and processes explored

I tried to use many different materials to developed this project. People in the contemporary society also have develop more angles to appreciate art, so artists also used various material to created their works and could give people bring different emotion. For example, Spencer Finch always use different material to created their own artworks, such as LED light, Print Card, wood… As for me, I would like use two or three different material together to make my work. In this project, when I bought pigment in art shops, I found print card which gave me a great idea to explored the colour composition on my sketchbook. I used them to explored some materials such as watercolour, acrylic, marker, and oil pastel, but finally, I decided to use acrylic and oil painting together to create this project.

Not only explored colour composition, but also texture in art I had to found. Sometimes, made some collages was my way to explored texture in art, and for this project I did that. However, I want to develop my way that I use that to explore my work, when I saw my friend cooked for his dinner who used his hand into bowl to maxed some vegetables. That way was inspired me to used my hand mixed the colour and then putted colour on the canvas to made their texture by nature. As this project, I tried to combined acrylic and oil painting together, and broken down the traditional rules in art.

Section 4: Daily Record

In my work, all of the requirement of each steps was defined in a detailed description in my blog. I think, it is a great way to remember my worktime. I used my own blog and sketchbook to remember my feeling about my project, and some knowledge and skills when I found and how to study. In the future, I will use the same way to learn and help me to do my project. Sometimes I use my sketchbook to drawing some sketch and even remember something in my daily life.

Section 5: Time Management and Action Plan

Art comes from life, and higher than life. As this project, I made a very detailed and feasible action plan for my project. In the time management, I recorded all the steps of the creation in the plan, such as sketch time, read time, and sometimes in museum, galleries. In the future, I want to make more detail in my own action plan, and more precise and specific. I think, sometimes people make a great time management or action plan can help them to allocation of time. It is reason why I want to improve my action plan in the future.

Kishio Suga

Kishio Suga (b. 1944, Iwanate Prefecture, JPN) currently lives and works in Shizuoka, Japan. He studied oil painting under Yoshishige Saito at Tama Art University and graduated in 1968. Rising to prominence in the mid-1960s, Suga and other Mono-ha artists, such as Lee Ufan and Nubuo Sekine, eschewed traditional representation, instead exploring quotidian and natural materials; investigating the relationship between them and their impact on the surrounding the space. The movement grew both in response to the rapid industrialisation of Japan and also as a reaction to the dominant influences of western art history.

Jeroen Verhoeven

Jeroen Verhoeven (b.1976 Netherlands) makes work that combines the fantastic with the practical: it is function and form turned into mystical narrative, where the supple feather-light impressions of dreams become objects that we can see, touch and most importantly use in our every-day lives. ‘We are storytellers, from fantasy to factory, from statement to product,’ Verhoeven writes on the website of the Dutch design house Demakersvan, which he founded together with his twin brother and Judith de Graauw. This storytelling, which Verhoeven so passionately advocates, not only demonstrates that the improbable can become the extraordinary, but it puts a new perspective on design itself: what it once was, what it has become, and what it might be in the future.

Section 1: Progress and Achievement

I mainly focused on traditional methods and skills, such as traditional oil painting, before I started to this project. However, I have acquired substantial knowledge about contemporary artists and their works, which encouraged me to convey my ideas through social problem, practice of colour and even history stories, which could be more expressive and creative compare to their traditional counterparts.

(Word count: 65)

Section 2: Context

I have been influenced a great number of contemporary artists. For example, a distinctive feature of Rachel Whiteread’s work is explored of space of daily furniture (such as door, stair, table, windows) in her sculpture, which reminded me to find inspirations in our everyday life and try to use different way to thinking. Another artist that has inspired me was Dali, who used two or more unconcerned things together and used their own logical to rebuild composition in his artworks. Thus, I decided to use some unconcerned things together and explode the language of art in my project.

Section 3: Project Proposal Aims, Methods and Realization

I have encountered a group of special people who are working for their own government and we always have a same named for SPY. In most of people’s view, spy always has a kind of mysterious colour and always shallow from shallow, no real name, no real ID, no background, even no national, and always alone… Because of their element of work, some people hate them, some departure want kill them. The recognition problem is more or less faced by spies throughout things, and I would like to developed an artwork about it.

My idea emerged by a small trip, when I took bus from Chelsea Collage of Art Station to the London Bridge Station. At time on the bus, I through the window to saw the IM6, Imperial War Museum, CCTV, traffic lights, and a kind of plant which we can find in London everywhere reminded me of those workers who are worked in secret places. Even though they used different way to steal information, even threat international security, and so many people hate them, however, as I think spy just a worker who they are working for their own country, I never think they are sinner, because every country has this a group of people, include China, USA, UK, Russia… I think, when they finish mission and come back home, whether it is captured or taken away, all of them, they are called heroes.

I would like to use oil painting and acrylic to compose my work. I want to create a work to explain a psychological activity from spy. I would be painting some plants which I found in London, and rebuild them look like a garden which give people a feel for quiet environment and use that stand for the spy maybe really want come to their home, and into a kind of quite world, but they cannot, and has a kind of aspire by spy. CCTV will be appeared in this work, and remind us the element of spy’s work. Some line will be drawing in this work which could be tell people have some embarrassed things will be appeared or some of disappointed events will be end. For instance, my work has adapted and re-created elements from some spy movies such as 007, Bridge of Spy, and Bourne Identity. Circular pattern of red and blue can be used as an important information about world pattern in the Cold War and spy always appeared between the Russia and USA. I believe my work would renovate traditional oil painting by contemporary adaptations.

Stage Summary

Title: Stage Summary

Edward.JIA (Hongyi Jia)

Summary of myself

I started this project on last month.  (02-Oct.-2017)

I have acquired a great number of knowledge, skills for my artwork.  (17-Oct.-2017)

As matter of fact, I have been worked for a mouth and I got a lot of sentiment. In this article, I would like discus this work and what something I will do in the future. (02-Nov.-2017)

Why I wanted to created this work and my idea from

First of all, when I took on the bus from Chelsea collage of art to London bridge bus station, MI6 as an important building in my eyes. In addition to the architectural feature of this building, a group of especial people always emerge in my mind —-spy who always from shallow to shallow and even working for secret war. Sometimes spy give us a kind of secret colour in our life, and we sometimes think they are far away by us life, however, they are everywhere. In my point of view, spy just has different work compare us, to be honest, they are human too, same as us. I want to put aside the political orientation to think about spy in terms of human nature. So, this is reason why I want to create this work and inspired people to care of spy who belongs to their own country.

Research for artists and their works

David Hockney

Rachel Whiteread

Dali

Secondly, I have been influenced greatly by various contemporary or modern artists. For example, a distinctive feature of David Hockney is the painting of daily life, especially from 1978 to 2009. At that time, David had created a great number of works and most of them used oil pigment and acyclic to made. Through his series of artworks, I think that he would thinking through the object after the observation, and after the results would be reflected in the painting. David Hockney’s artwork always inspired me to create my own work through the observation in my daily life. Another artist that helped me to developed me ideas was Rachel Whiteread. Rachel Whiteread’s artworks unlike traditional cast sculpture, which is intended to replicate objects, Whiteread’s works instead cast the space inside or around everyday forms, such as doors, windows, tables, and even stairs. Recording their surfaces and allowing their shapes to determine the form of her sculpture and explored the context with human and everyday environment. Whiteread’s artwork inspired me to use different way to explore something which something is interested me and even use this way in my artworks. Last but not at least, Dali always used unrelated things together and rebuild their stories or even logic by themselves which inspired me to studied this way to developed my work when I decided to started this project. Thus, I used oil painting to created my work and used many unrelated things together and rebuild by myself for this project.

Research in Imperial War Museum for MI6 History

Thirdly, I made a research for spy, and went to Imperial War Museum to learned some knowledge about history of MI6.

Secret War explores the undercover world of espionage, covert operations and the work of Britain’s Special Forces. Discover how threats both at home and abroad were dealt with through the strategies and techniques of the men and women behind some of the most secret espionage missions of the last century.

As known as the Security Service, MI5 was established in 1909 but it was only eighty years later that its role was formal and publicly defined. The responsibility of the Service shall be: the protection of national security and, in particular protection against environmental from espionage, terrorism and sabotage, from the activities of agents of foreign powers and from measures intended to overthrow or undermine parliamentary democracy by political, industrial or violent means

MI6, the Secret Intelligence Service, was created in 1909 but its role and very existence was not recognized recognized until the Intelligence Services Act of 1994 which stated that its functions were: a) to obtain and provide information relating to the actions or intentions of persons outside the British Islands b) to perform other tasks relating to the actions or intentions of such persons.

Colour Practice,  material, and Sketch

Fourthly, great works must have great colors, and also give us different emotion. I read a book which the name is ‘Interaction of Colour’. In this book talk about a number of ways to explore the colour in art, and use some of interesting example to explain how to understand colour.

For example, ‘In musical compositions, so long as we hear merely single tones, we do not hear music.Hearing music depends on the recognition of the in-between of the tones of their placing and of their spacing. Equally, a factual identification of colours within a given painting has nothing to do with a sensitive seeing nor with an understanding of the colours action with in painting.’ Sometimes, I like use different way and various material (such as oil pastel, pastel, watercolour, and marker) to draw my sketchbooks and also use that put in my final work.

What elements  I want to be used ?

As far as concerned, in this project, this is my first time to try to use unrelated things together and rebuild the stories, such as plants, garden, CCTV, camera, traffic lights, and spy equipment. In my point of view, spy is group of people who have different and special mission to be finished, because element of the work, so they always alone, even lonely, no name, no family, no life, no background… They just from shallow to shallow. They want to have a quiet life, beautiful garden, sweet family, but they cannot to get it, so this is the reason why people always say spy is a single ticket.

Working in special places and environment also have different equipment, before the computer and phone, Radio and Moors passwords are always accompanied by them, which could send a great number of messages to their boss, and they have to filter all kinds of information every day.

In the Morden city, we can find CCTV and traffic light on street, and I think, we have two spaces in our city, one is around us, like traffic light to control us, and another is in underground, like CCTV and secret lines. To be honest, CCTV can be found everywhere and as great way to protect people and bring safe to our society, but sometimes, CCTV also as a spy to surveillance us. This is reason why I used so many looks like unrelated things to together to created my work.

Last, but no least, I have been made this project for a month, I got a lot, but I also find some of problem in this work. For example, as a people to appreciate this work, sometimes it is different to understand the painter’s idea and think is work just a landscape. In the future, I will be changed something on canvas and add too some special things which can give people a little bit hinted and orientation. In the future, I will make more research and draw more and more sketch, maybe can help me to avoid some problem. I think, it is a great start which can give me more experience to my study in the future and encourage me to do more work in my future.
